Update: 2024 Virginia Building Code Development Cycle

The Board of Housing and Community Development recently acted on more than 160 proposed amendments to the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), marking the midpoint of the 2024 Virginia Building Code Development Cycle.

The 2024 Virginia USBC is tentatively scheduled to take effect in October 2027, beginning a one-year transition period during which permit applicants may use either the 2021 or 2024 Code. Mandatory compliance with the 2024 USBC is expected to begin in October 2028.

The Home Builders Association of Virginia prepared a reference guide summarizing each proposal considered by the Board and indicating whether it was approved or disapproved for inclusion in the 2024 USBC.
